Overview
The Breath Intimacy Master Course is designed to educate coaches, therapists, facilitators or anyone looking to unlock healing… by integrating bio-social science and the depth potential of breathwork.
This comprehensive course blends post-traumatic growth tools, neurobiology, and embodied techniques to expand the breath’s role in shaping consciousness and well-being.
It is a stand alone deep-dive course on the science and art of breathing as the fulcrum of mental, emotional and physical health! When we understand HOW something works, it works better and we are able to WORK WITH IT consciously.
Course Outline
Module 1: Breath as Relationship – The Foundation of Existence
Drawing from Berndtson's (2018) Phenomenological Ontology of Breathing, this module explores breath as central to perception and awareness. The course will begin with an immersive study into phenomenological perspectives on breath, moving beyond anatomical views to a holistic, existential perspective.
Topics Covered:
Process and Relationality of Breath: Understand breath as a relational force that binds individuals to the world, each other - and which grounds awareness, and as central (not periphery) to health.
Historical and Philosophical Context: Explore the breath as an ally and oracle, BEFORE approaching it as a functional component of physiology in following modules.
Practical Exploration: Engage in silent breath practices to access altered states of awareness and attune to breath’s subtle rhythms, drawing from science, vedic and taoist praxis. Spinal freeing exercises included.
Key Learning Objectives:
Develop a personal understanding of breath as more than a physiological process, deeply connected to subtle unfreezing of the body and mind.
Explore philosophical insights into the non-material dimensions of breath.
Cultivate the art of attention, silence, and openness in meditation oriented module.
Module 2: Anatomy of Breathing – The Five Diaphragms and Functional Breathing
Based on Bordoni and Zanier's (2015) research on the body's diaphragms, this module offers a comprehensive view of the anatomical and physiological elements of breathing. Understanding the connections among the five diaphragms will empower facilitators to better support breath mechanics in their clients.
Topics Covered:
The Five Diaphragms: Anatomical study of the diaphragm muscle, pelvic floor, floor of the mouth, thoracic outlet, and tentorium cerebelli.
Fascia, Nervous System, and Breathing: How these systems interrelate, with a focus on the phrenic and vagal nerves.
Hands-On Techniques: Manual adjustments for breath support, emphasizing fascial continuity and nervous system involvement.
Key Learning Objectives:
Identify the five diaphragms and their impact on breath.
Practice and refine hands-on adjustments for enhanced breathing capacity.
Recognize the importance of posture and physical alignment in facilitating deeper breaths by using different shapes to access fuller, relaxed breathing.
Module 3: Emotional Breath – The Neurobiology of Breath and Emotion
Drawing from Gilbert's (1998) work on disordered breathing and emotional regulation, this module covers how breath patterns relate to the nervous system, emotions, and trauma responses. Facilitators will gain insights into how breathing can shift between functional and dysfunctional, especially under stress.
Topics Covered:
Breath and the Nervous System: Examine the role of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems in breath responses.
Conditioned Breathing Patterns: How breath-holding and upper chest breathing become habitual under stress.
Emotional Triggers and Somatic Memory: Addressing the relationship between breath, trauma, and conditioned responses.
Key Learning Objectives:
Learn techniques to recognize and address dysfunctional breath patterns rooted in emotional responses.
Understand the biological and psychological implications of breath-holding and upper chest breathing.
Gain tools for helping clients build resilience through emotional regulation and breathwork practices.
Module 4: Breath and Trauma Recovery – Facilitating Post-Traumatic Growth
Building on the research by Splevins et al. (2010) and Yu et al. (2018), this module examines breathwork as a tool for facilitating trauma recovery and post-traumatic growth (PTG). Facilitators will learn how breathing can help manage and integrate traumatic memories while supporting neuroplasticity in regions like the hippocampus.
Topics Covered:
Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Trauma and Growth: Critiquing PTG through a culturally sensitive lens.
Hippocampus and Stress Response: Impact of stress on brain development and the role of breathing in trauma-informed care.
Breathwork for Resilience: Methods for supporting trauma recovery, including safe, gradual exposure to breath patterns that promote calm and balance.
Key Learning Objectives:
Develop culturally sensitive practices for facilitating post-traumatic growth through breath.
Understand the impact of early stress on brain function and its relevance to breathing.
Apply trauma-informed breath techniques to support healing and resilience, alongside exploration of more state-altering breath patterns.
REMINDER:
TIME: SAT 9-10:15 am PST, NOV. 23 - DEC. 14th
LOCATION: ONLINE ZOOM ROOM - GIVEN AFTER REGISTRATION.

It is a journey beyond meditation, through breath, and into life.
